 Daffodil Planting Around Lakeyard

First blooms of 2004 Daffodil Planting around Lakeyard

On November 15, 2005 ten garden club members planted an
additional 1000 Carlton daffodil bulbs around the lake.
The bulbs were donated to the project by the Florida Daffodil Society.

An Article about last years planting:

Garden Club Dedicates Planting To Our Veterans and Servicemen

DeFuniak Springs Garden Club has dedicated the yellow daffodil planting around the lake yard to our area veterans and servicemen. The group had scheduled to plant the 1500 bulbs on Veterans Day, but due to rain the planting was rescheduled for Monday, Nov 15th. The ‘Carlton’ daffodils are large cupped and bright yellow. They are perennial bulbs suited for the south and will bloom in the early spring every year.

During times of conflict, loved ones on the American homefront often symbolize the safe return of US servicemen and women by displaying yellow ribbons. These living “yellow ribbons” will be an annual reminder that Americans live in freedom because of our veterans’ and servicemen's courage, dedication to duty and love of country. The DeFuniak Springs Garden Club wishes to say with flowers “Thank you to all of you veterans and servicemen for all the sacrifices you have made while defending our founding ideals, protecting the innocent, and liberating the oppressed from tyranny and terror and may God bless you all”.

Blue Star Marker Planting

A new Blue Star Marker has been placed at Hwy 90 and 331 as a result of damaged caused by a car that ran over it during the July 4th weekend! In addition, two dead trees were removed and the irrigation system repaired.  On August 18th, the group re-landscaped the area. They weeded and pulled out dead annuals, then added nine red roses and twelve blue plumbagos.  The Blue Star Marker is a tribute to our servicemen and women. Florida Federation of Garden Clubs sponsor these markers throughout the state.

Floral Design Class

A program was given by Gina Jogan at the April 2005 meeting. Gina is a Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Floral Design Schools Instructor and a Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judge. The group enjoyed the program and those who stayed for the hands-on workshop all took home their own floral designs. The hostesses for the April meeting were Faye Hardy, Jean Anderson, Marie Lathinghouse, Ann Robinson, Celia Robinson and Carolyn Mora. Upside down umbrellas that spilled over with spring flowers were used as the table decorations. The hostess group made edible flower pots as part of the refreshments, they were almost too pretty to eat!

What a great centerpiece!

Native Plant Sale and Education day - March 2006

The DeFuniak Springs Garden Club Native Plant Sale and Education day was a great success! There were almost 400 people who came to the library for the event on March 25th. The Garden Club would like to express their deep appreciation for all the community support they received for the project. Profit from the sale will help to continue to beautify and complete The DeFuniak Springs Library Reading Garden, an educational native plant garden. A granite entrance sign was put in place just in time for the event. Ward-McDonald memorial Company generously donated a beautifully engraved granite stone sign that welcomes all visitors.

Nearly 2000 native trees,
shrubs, vines and wildflowers
were sold in 4 hours!
